Ahhh, a beautiful day!! Yesterday was spectacular! Last night was a dream come true--we actually needed covers. The kids complained they were cold... I opened all the windows and breathed deeply. The return of the cool has ended my longing to move to Alaska. I want to stay in New England (hopefully NH) forever.

Right now Mary is wrapped in an afghan, curled on the couch.

Anyway...

Peaches. Boy did we get peaches! I was aiming for 2 bushes, but somehow we came home with 3 1/2! (How does one accidentally pick an extra 75 pounds?!) So we have been busy. Nathan sorted them into "now", "tomorrow", and "in a few days" piles based on ripeness. Wednesday night we did the "nows" and were up until 3am. We did 25 quarts of sliced peaches, froze as many as our puny little freezer would hold, and sliced up enough for another batch. But we were too tired to continue and just popped them in the fridge.

Yesterday I brought up the rest of the canning jars and discovered that we don't have nearly as many as I thought. Storing empty jars makes it seem like there are way more than there really are I guess. It felt like we had hundreds, but we actually don't have enough to finish the peaches and leave any left for applesauce. So now what do I do? I can't eat that many peaches (actually, don't have the taste for them at all right now!), but I can't imagine a year without applesauce. Hmmm... Craigslist?

Anyway, yesterday the kids and I made 18 pints of peach cobbler filling/pancake topping and 12 jam jars of peach-orange conserve. Totally yummy. Today we'll make enough spiced peach jam to finish off the jelly jars, maybe some more cobbler to finish off the pints. Tonight we'll can more sliced peaches, but maybe try a batch or two of spiced. And of course, we have to make a cobbler for dessert, some turnovers for snacking, Nathan's co-workers have asked for a pie on Mon, and... and... seriously? What the heck am I going to do with all these peaches?

And for a non-peach diversion yesterday, lil'Nathan managed to get a whole wad of silly putty stuck in his hair. Good and stuck, right in the back at the top of his head, against the scalp, wonderfully tangled and folded. We got it out without the use of scissors... well, mostly.

Hmmm, is it time to start ding dong ditching bags of peaches on other people's doorsteps? :)
